タイでの両眼白内障手術に関するFAQ

これらのFAQはBookimedを通じて医療支援を求める実際の患者からのものです。回答は経験豊富な医療コーディネーターと信頼できるクリニック代表者が行います。

What intraocular lens (IOL) options are available in Thai hospitals?

Thai hospitals provide a full spectrum of intraocular lenses (IOLs), including monofocal, multifocal, trifocal, and Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) options. Leading centers in Bangkok and Phuket utilize global brands like Alcon, Zeiss, and Johnson & Johnson to treat cataracts with high precision.

  • Monofocal lenses: Standard vision correction for a single distance, typically requiring glasses for reading.
  • Multifocal and trifocal: Premium implants providing clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances.
  • Toric lenses: Specialized optics designed to correct astigmatism alongside standard cataract removal.
  • EDOF technology: Extended Depth of Focus lenses offering continuous vision ranges with fewer night halos.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics offer monofocal lenses, high-volume centers like Bumrungrad International Hospital and TRSC International Eye and Vision Center specialize in premium Alcon PanOptix and Symfony EDOF implants. Data shows these specialized clinics often perform over 1,000 implantations annually, ensuring surgeons have the specific expertise needed to calibrate advanced multifocal lenses for optimal visual sharpess.

Patient Consensus: Patients report significant satisfaction with the availability of FDA-approved lenses like Tecnis and AcrySof at roughly 74% less than US costs. Many advise testing multifocal simulators at the clinic to ensure the chosen lens matches your lifestyle needs.

Can I have cataract surgery on both eyes on the same day?

Patients can undergo cataract surgery on both eyes the same day in Thailand through Immediate Sequential Bilateral Cataract Surgery. This approach offers balanced vision quickly, though many top-tier Bangkok facilities like Bumrungrad International Hospital often recommend a one-week interval to monitor the first eye's healing process.

  • Travel convenience: Simultaneous recovery reduces the total stay in Thailand for international patients.
  • Cost efficiency: Consolidating procedures often leads to lower hospital fees and fewer medication purchases.
  • Surgical expertise: Surgeons like Dr. Pichit Naripthaphan have performed over 12,000 successful eye surgeries.
  • Facility standards: Leading centers maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation to ensure sterile environments.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While same-day surgery is available, our data shows a trend where clinics with massive patient volumes, such as Bumrungrad serving 1 million people annually, prioritize safety by spacing surgeries. This gap between eyes allows surgeons to adjust the lens power for the second eye based on the refractive outcome of the first, ensuring sharper final vision.

Patient Consensus: Patients often prefer sequential surgery for peace of mind, despite the convenience of same-day procedures. Many advise budgeting for extra recovery days in Thailand to avoid traveling while vision remains blurry from postoperative swelling.

Is cataract surgery painful?

Cataract surgery is generally painless because surgeons use local anesthetic eye drops or injections to numb the eye. Patients remain awake but relaxed due to mild sedation. While you may feel slight pressure or cooling sensations, the 10 to 15 minute procedure involves no sharp pain.

  • Anesthesia methods: Surgeons typically use numbing drops or local injections for complete comfort.
  • Intraoperative sensations: Most patients report feeling light tugging or mild pressure without pain.
  • Recovery timeline: Initial grittiness or light sensitivity usually subsides within 1 to 3 days.
  • Post-operative care: Minor itching or scratching is managed with prescribed drops and over-the-counter relievers.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai clinics like Bumrungrad International Hospital and Laser Vision at Bangkok Eye Hospital treat over 100,000 eyes using advanced phacoemulsification. Many specialized centers allow you to choose drop-only anesthesia if you are needle-averse. This flexibility, combined with high surgical volumes, ensures a refined, discomfort-free patient experience.

Patient Consensus: Patients often describe the surgery as a short, weird nap where they feel sandy eyes for only 1 day. Most recommend having sunglasses ready for immediate post-op light sensitivity.

What is the typical recovery timeline after cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery recovery typically spans 4 to 8 weeks for complete healing, though most patients experience significant vision improvement within 24 to 48 hours. While initial blurring is common, sharp vision usually stabilizes by week 4 as the eye adjusts to the new intraocular lens.

  • First 48 hours: Vision often remains hazy while light sensitivity and mild grittiness are expected sensations.
  • Week 1 milestones: Patients generally return to light desk work and driving once cleared by a surgeon.
  • Activity restrictions: Avoid heavy lifting, bending, and getting water in eyes for at least 7 days.
  • Final stabilization: Complete neuroadaptation for multifocal lenses can take 1 to 3 months for optimal results.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from top Bangkok centers like Bumrungrad International Hospital shows a growing preference for sequential bilateral surgery spaced 1 to 2 weeks apart. This strategy maintains one functional eye throughout the process, minimizing total downtime. For international patients, a 7-day stay per eye is the optimal window to complete all essential post-operative checkups before flying.

Patient Consensus: Many patients report achieving sharp vision within the first month but highlight that premium lenses may cause temporary night glare. Maintaining strict hygiene is vital in Thailand's tropical climate to prevent irritation while managing persistent dry eyes.

How long does the actual cataract surgery take per eye?

Cataract surgery in Thailand typically takes 10 to 20 minutes per eye. High-volume centers like Bumrungrad International Hospital often complete routine phacoemulsification cases in 8 to 12 minutes. While the surgical portion is brief, patients should plan for 2 to 4 hours at the facility for preparation and monitoring.

  • Surgical duration: Most uncomplicated procedures are finished within 10 to 15 minutes per eye.
  • Preparation time: Pre-operative dilation and local anesthesia administration require 60 to 90 minutes.
  • Recovery monitoring: Medical staff observe patients for 20 to 30 minutes before discharge.
  • Complex cases: Dense cataracts or previous eye conditions may extend surgery to 30 minutes.
  • Eye scheduling: Surgeons typically operate on the second eye 1 to 4 weeks after the first.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from top-tier Bangkok clinics shows that precision technologies actually shorten the manual surgical phase. For instance, centers using femtosecond lasers, such as TRSC International Eye and Vision Center, complete the laser portion in 90 seconds. This allows the surgeon to finish the remaining steps in about 6 minutes, minimizing physical stress on the eye.

Patient Consensus: Patients frequently mention the efficiency of Thai medical staff during the quick 10-minute procedure. Many are surprised by how rapidly they move from the preparation area to the recovery room with improved clarity.

What restrictions apply during post-operative recovery?

Post-operative restrictions after cataract surgery in Thailand focus on protecting the eye from pressure, infection, and strain. Patients must avoid rubbing eyes, lifting objects over 10 pounds, and bending below the waist for 1 to 2 weeks. Protective eye shields are required during sleep.

  • Physical activity: Avoid weightlifting, running, and strenuous exercise for 14 days to prevent ocular pressure.
  • Water exposure: No swimming, saunas, or direct facial showering for 2 weeks to reduce infection risks.
  • Eye protection: Wear sunglasses outdoors and use provided eye shields at night for 7 days.
  • Hygiene protocols: Keep the face dry for 48 hours; use taped goggles for hair washing thereafter.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from Bangkok centers like TRSC and Laser Vision shows many surgeons stagger procedures 5–7 days apart. This strategy minimizes the overlap of total vision restriction. It also allows for affordable follow-up visits at local Thai clinics to monitor steroid-induced eye pressure spikes.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that while flying is safe within 48 hours, wearing sunglasses is mandatory for comfort in Thailand's bright sunlight. Most found the vision stabilized quickly despite the temporary ban on bending and heavy lifting.

What types of intraocular lenses (IOLs) are available for cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery in Thailand offers several intraocular lens (IOL) options, including standard monofocal, multifocal, trifocal, and Toric lenses for astigmatism. Specialized clinics in Bangkok also provide Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) and Eyhance lenses to improve intermediate vision and reduce glasses dependency.

  • Monofocal lenses: Clear vision at one distance, typically requiring reading glasses for near tasks.
  • Multifocal and trifocal: Multiple focal points allow for clear near, intermediate, and far distance vision.
  • Toric IOLs: Specifically designed to correct corneal astigmatism alongside standard cataract removal.
  • EDOF lenses: Provide a continuous range of vision, improving computer use with fewer night halos.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai eye centers like TRSC International have restored over 100,000 eyes, often using premium brands like Alcon PanOptix. We see a trend where patients stagger surgeries by 14 days. This allows the surgeon to fine-tune the second eye's lens power based on initial results.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend monofocal or Toric lenses if night driving is your priority. For those choosing multifocals, many suggest testing extended-wear contacts first to simulate the visual effects before surgery.

What is typically included in a cataract package for international patients in Thailand?

Cataract packages in Thailand typically include bilateral surgery using phacoemulsification, premium intraocular lenses from brands like Alcon or Johnson & Johnson, and comprehensive pre-operative biometry. Most bundles cover surgeon fees, anesthesia, and 1 to 3 post-operative follow-up visits within the first week.

  • Surgical technique: Packages prioritize phacoemulsification with same-day or next-day sequential surgery for both eyes.
  • Lens options: Standard inclusions feature monofocal IOLs, while multifocal or toric lenses require upgrades.
  • Clinical diagnostics: Essential pre-op scans, corneal mapping, and lens power calculations are usually bundled.
  • Patient logistics: International bundles often add 3–7 nights in 4-star hotels and VIP transfers.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from top centers like Bumrungrad International and TRSC International shows a high concentration of internationally trained specialists. For example, Dr. Pichit Naripthaphan at TRSC is a former president of the Cataract and Refractive Surgery Club. Choosing these academic-led centers often secures access to the latest Alcon or Zeiss technology unavailable at smaller clinics.

Patient Consensus: Patients value packages that include extended hotel stays, noting that flying in 2 days early for biometry prevents rushed lens fittings. Many recommend budgeting an extra $500 for specialized anti-inflammatory drops or unexpected YAG laser adjustments post-surgery.

When can I safely board an international flight after cataract surgery?

Most patients can safely board an international flight 24 to 72 hours after cataract surgery, provided there are no complications. However, surgeons in Thailand generally recommend waiting 3 to 7 days for bilateral cases to ensure intraocular pressure stabilizes and follow-up exams are complete.

  • Initial clearance: Attend a mandatory post-operative check-up 1 to 3 days after your procedure.
  • Bilateral surgery: Wait at least 3 to 5 days if both eyes were treated.
  • In-flight care: Use preservative-free artificial tears hourly to combat dry, pressurized cabin air.
  • Physical restrictions: Avoid lifting heavy luggage to prevent straining intraocular incisions during transit.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai clinics like Bumrungrad International and TRSC often clear international patients for travel faster than Western centers. Our data shows surgeons frequently provide `fit-to-fly` certificates after the 72-hour mark. This efficiency stems from high-volume centers performing thousands of surgeries, ensuring stable results before you head to Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Patient Consensus: Travelers suggest packing extra eye drops and using protective shields to prevent accidental rubbing while sleeping during long-haul flights back home.
