タイでの多焦点眼内レンズ挿入術に関するFAQ

これらのFAQはBookimedを通じて医療支援を求める実際の患者からのものです。回答は経験豊富な医療コーディネーターと信頼できるクリニック代表者が行います。

What should I avoid during recovery?

After cataract surgery with multifocal lens implants in Thailand, you must avoid rubbing your eyes, lifting objects over 10 pounds, and getting water in the treated eye. These restrictions prevent lens displacement and infection while your eye adapts to the new multifocal optical system.

  • Ocular pressure: Avoid bending over or straining to prevent shifts in the multifocal lens position.
  • Contamination risks: Skip makeup, lotions, and dusty environments for 1–2 weeks to prevent serious irritation.
  • Water exposure: Stay away from pools and avoid getting shower water or sweat in eyes.
  • Physical trauma: Use protective eye shields while sleeping for 7–14 days to prevent accidental rubbing.
  • Travel safety: Avoid flying for at least 7 days to manage post-operative pressure changes safely.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai clinics like Laser Vision or TRSC often recommend a full 7-day hotel stay because multifocal lenses require a specific neuroadaptation period. While standard cataract surgery feels resolved in 48 hours, these high-tech lenses often cause temporary halos that make navigating unfamiliar Bangkok streets or night driving difficult during the first week.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that strictly following the eye-drop schedule and wearing dark glasses indoors is the only way to manage early glare. Most found that skipping goggles in the shower was their biggest risk for potential infection.

What are the best hospitals for this procedure in Thailand?

The best hospitals for cataract surgery with multifocal lens implants in Thailand include Bumrungrad International Hospital, TRSC International Eye and Vision Center, and Laser Vision at Bangkok Eye Hospital. These JCI-accredited facilities offer advanced technology like the Alcon CENTURION system and femtosecond laser-assisted techniques.

  • Bumrungrad International: JCI-accredited global leader treating 1 million patients annually across 70 specialized departments.
  • TRSC Eye Center: Boutique center with over 100,000 procedures using advanced phacoemulsification and ISO-certified systems.
  • Laser Vision: Specialized eye hospital featuring no-blade femtosecond technology and multifocal toric lens implantation.
  • Chiangmai Ram: Premier Northern Thailand choice for JCI-accredited care favored by long-stay international expats.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While general hospitals like Bumrungrad offer world-class infrastructure, specialized clinics like TRSC often provide higher surgeon continuity. Dr. Pichit Naripthaphan at TRSC, for instance, is the President of the Cataract and Refractive Surgery Club of Thailand. This level of leadership usually translates to more refined lens matching protocols for multifocal patients.

Patient Consensus: Patients frequently report that multifocal IOLs like PanOptix provide excellent vision outcomes. While some notice temporary halos, most return to work within days while enjoying significant savings over Western costs.

What is a multifocal lens implant?

A multifocal lens implant is a permanent artificial lens that replaces the natural eye lens during cataract surgery. Unlike standard monofocal lenses, these premium implants feature multiple focal points to provide clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances simultaneously.

  • Vision range: Provides clear sight for driving, computer work, and reading without glasses.
  • Advanced optics: Uses concentric rings to split light into several distinct focus zones.
  • Spectacle independence: Approximately 80–90% of patients achieve freedom from glasses within 4 weeks.
  • Condition correction: Simultaneously treats cataracts, nearsightedness, farsightedness, and age-related near vision loss.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While US prices average $5,000, Thailand clinics like TRSC International Eye and Vision Center offer these procedures starting at $2,500. Our data shows Thai surgeons often have massive experience; Dr. Pichit Naripthaphan has performed over 900+ procedures. This high volume is critical because multifocal success depends heavily on precise lens positioning.

Patient Consensus: Most patients report a significant lifestyle improvement but suggest a 1–3 month adaptation period. You may notice halos around lights at night, so consider this if you drive frequently in the dark.

How long should I stay in Thailand for the surgery?

Patients should plan to stay in Thailand for 10 to 14 days for cataract surgery with multifocal lens implants. While the 15-30 minute procedure is typically outpatient, this duration allows for essential neuroadaptation monitoring, same-city follow-ups, and a safe recovery window before high-altitude air travel.

  • Hospital stay: Most eye centers in Bangkok require 0 to 1 day of hospitalization.
  • Treatment gap: Surgeons usually wait 3 to 4 days between operating on each eye.
  • Follow-up schedule: A critical check-up is mandatory at 7 days to verify lens positioning.
  • Flight safety: Patients must wait at least 48 hours post-op to avoid pressure-related complications.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While basic cataract surgery only requires a 24-hour stay, multifocal implants are different. Data shows top clinics like Laser Vision at Bangkok Eye Hospital recommend a 7-day hotel stay. This allows surgeons like Dr. Anun Vongthongsri to monitor how your brain adapts to the new light distribution. Booking at least 12 days total ensures you have a 4-day buffer. This is vital if the surgeon needs to tweak your prescription or manage initial glare issues.

Patient Consensus: Many patients suggest arriving 2 days early to complete all pre-operative mapping. They emphasize that staying nearly 2 weeks is necessary to manage the initial halos and ensure vision stabilizes before the flight home.

Is the surgery painful?

Cataract surgery with multifocal lens implants in Thailand is typically painless. Surgeons use topical numbing drops or IV sedation to ensure patient comfort throughout the 10-15 minute procedure. Most patients report feeling only bright lights and slight pressure rather than any sharp sensations during the operation.

  • Anesthesia method: Doctors use specialized numbing drops or light IV sedation for a pain-free experience.
  • Typical duration: The entire surgical process for one eye usually lasts only 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Recovery sensations: Some patients describe a mild sandy feeling or light sensitivity during the first day.
  • Healing timeline: Most discomfort resolves within 24 hours while full vision adaptation takes 2 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many think advanced lasers increase discomfort, the no-blade femtosecond technique used at Laser Vision actually minimizes physical trauma. Clinics using the Alcon CENTURION system further enhance safety and comfort. Choosing a surgeon with 900+ procedures, like those at TRSC, ensures the efficiency that keeps procedure times under 15 minutes.

Patient Consensus: Patients describe the experience as being easier than a dental visit, often noting they felt nothing but bright lights. The primary post-operative challenge is usually light sensitivity rather than pain, making high-quality sunglasses essential for the first few days.

How long is the recovery period?

Recovery from cataract surgery with multifocal lens implants in Thailand typically involves 24 hours of immediate rest and one week for initial healing. While surgical incisions close quickly, visual neuroadaptation to multifocal lenses generally requires 3 to 6 months for optimal clarity at all distances.

  • Hospital stay: Most patients undergo outpatient surgery with 0 to 1 day of hospitalization.
  • Initial stabilization: Visual acuity begins to stabilize within 1 to 4 weeks after the procedure.
  • Travel window: Surgeons recommend staying in Thailand for 7 days for essential follow-up exams.
  • Activity resumption: Most patients return to light work and daily routines within 7 days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai clinics like Laser Vision or TRSC International often use the Alcon CENTURION system and femtosecond lasers to minimize tissue trauma. Data shows that high-volume surgeons here, some with 100,000 procedures, achieve faster physical recovery. However, multifocal patients must stay patient as the brain takes time to learn how to toggle between different focal points.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize using prescribed eye drops religiously during the first week to ensure smooth healing. Many report that while physical recovery is fast, the true adjustment to multifocal vision feels most natural after 3 months.

How long does the surgery take?

Cataract surgery with multifocal lens implants in Thailand typically takes 10 to 20 minutes per eye. This outpatient procedure uses advanced techniques like no-blade femtosecond laser or phacoemulsification. Most patients spend 2 to 4 hours at the clinic including preoperative preparation, pupil dilation, and brief postoperative monitoring.

  • Surgical duration: Most procedures finish within 10 to 15 minutes of active surgical time.
  • Clinical stay: Expect 2 to 4 hours total for diagnostics, prep, and recovery monitoring.
  • Anesthesia type: Surgeons use local anesthesia drops, ensuring patients remain comfortable during the quick process.
  • Hospital stay: Patients typically go home the same day with 0 to 1 day hospitalization.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While the surgery itself is remarkably fast, clinics like Laser Vision at Bangkok Eye Hospital often recommend a 7-day stay in Thailand. This is not for surgical recovery, which happens in 24 hours, but to allow for precise follow-up checks and to ensure the multifocal lens has settled perfectly before you fly. Choosing a surgeon like Dr. Anun Vongthongsri, who has performed over 900 procedures, ensures the placement of these complex lenses is handled with high efficiency.

Patient Consensus: Patients frequently mention that the actual laser or phacoemulsification stage feels like it lasts only 5 minutes. The most significant time is spent on preoperative eye drops and waiting for full dilation before entering the theater.

When can I fly back home?

Most patients can safely fly 1 to 2 days after cataract surgery with multifocal lens implants in Thailand. While cabin pressure does not affect the eye, surgeons at clinics like TRSC International Eye and Vision Center typically require a 24-hour follow-up before clearance.

  • Hospital stay: Patients usually spend 0 to 1 days in the hospital for this outpatient procedure.
  • Post-op check: A mandatory 1-day follow-up ensures the multifocal lens is perfectly centered before travel.
  • Travel window: Although many fly within 48 hours, a 7-day hotel stay is often recommended.
  • Recovery focus: Use antibiotic drops and avoid rubbing eyes during the flight to prevent infection.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While basic packages start at $2,650, premium options in Bangkok often include a 7-day recovery stay. Data shows surgeons like Dr. Pichit Naripthaphan have performed over 12,000 surgeries, suggesting that high volume correlates with faster, complication-free discharges for international travelers.

Patient Consensus: Most travelers fly home shortly after their 1-day checkup without pressure issues. Patients suggest packing extra artificial tears to combat dry cabin air and wearing sunglasses to manage temporary light sensitivity.

Are there side effects specific to multifocal lenses?

Multifocal lenses cause specific visual phenomena including halos, starbursts, and glare around bright lights, especially during night driving. These effects stem from the lens design splitting light into multiple focal points. While offering clear vision at various distances, patients often require three to six months for neurological adaptation.

  • Visual disturbances: Seeing rings or starbursts around headlights specifically due to the multifocal ring design.
  • Contrast sensitivity: Colors may appear less crisp or slightly washed out in low-light environments.
  • Neurological adaptation: The brain requires significant time to learn how to process simultaneous focal points.
  • Ghosting effects: Some patients perceive a secondary blurry image alongside the primary clear one initially.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a high-volume surgeon is critical because they better manage the specific neuroadaptation phase. For instance, Dr. Pichit Naripthaphan at TRSC International Eye and Vision Center has performed over 12,000 surgeries. Experts like him often suggest trying multifocal contact lenses before surgery to simulate the visual trade-offs firsthand.

Patient Consensus: Many describe nighttime driving as looking through a kaleidoscope due to the intense halos. While most adapt, some patients find the reduced contrast in dim rooms annoying and suggest sticking to monofocal lenses if night vision is your top priority.
