The doctor is very competent, trustworthy, attentive, positive and charismatic
My father, 76 years old, had a knee replacement - Dr Olcay Guller. The doctor is very competent, trustworthy, attentive, positive and charismatic. This is important because my father was very worried and doubtful, but after the first meeting with the doctor he was completely reassured. All pre-operative investigations were organised quickly. Preparation for the operation and the operation itself - everything went smoothly. The next morning my dad was already walking along the corridor with the help of crutches. Nurses and nurses are attentive and friendly, no remarks. Feeding was also excellent, even a lot. I was placed in a spacious ward with a large window and air conditioning. In the bathroom everything is adapted for immobile patients, spacious barrier-free shower. On the territory of the hotel there are a couple of cafes with a good menu, Starbucks. The internet in the hospital is quite good.
All in all it was a pleasant experience. Would recommend the hospital with a clear conscience if needed
About Bookimed service
I don't know how long I would have searched for a hospital myself if I hadn't written to Bukimed. There was hardly any free time for this, and there were many doubts about the choice. With Bukimed everything unfolded quickly and in a couple of weeks my father was already seen by a doctor.

FAQ about Unicompartmental (partial) knee replacement in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is a unicompartmental (partial) knee replacement?

Unicompartmental knee replacement is a minimally invasive surgery that replaces only one damaged section of the knee joint. This procedure preserves healthy bone, cartilage, and vital ligaments like the ACL, offering a more natural joint feel and significantly faster recovery than total knee replacement.

  • Targeted treatment: Only the medial, lateral, or patellofemoral compartment is resurfaced with implants.
  • Ligament preservation: Keeps original ACL and PCL intact to maintain superior joint stability.
  • Small incision: Surgeons use 3–5 inch incisions, resulting in minimal scarring and less pain.
  • Rapid recovery: Patients often resume normal daily activities within 3 to 6 weeks post-surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Success in partial knee replacement depends heavily on surgeon volume and technology. Clinics like Turan Turan Health Group pioneered robotic-assisted joint replacement in Turkey, having completed over 3,500 procedures. This robotic precision is critical because even a 1-millimeter misalignment in a partial replacement can increase long-term revision risks.

Patient Consensus: Patients frequently describe the results as a half a knee replacement that feels completely natural. Many report walking the same day and returning to high-impact sports like skiing within just a few months.

Who is a good candidate for this surgery?

Ideal candidates for unicompartmental knee replacement in Turkey typically possess localized osteoarthritis confined to a single knee compartment. Success requires intact anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL) and a body mass index (BMI) under 35. Patients between 50 and 75 years of age generally achieve the best long-term outcomes.

  • Disease localization: Arthritis must affect only one knee area without widespread inflammatory conditions.
  • Ligament stability: Functional ACL and medial collateral ligaments are essential for joint stability.
  • Physical health: Optimal candidates maintain a BMI below 35 to prevent early wear.
  • Activity level: Patients must commit to low-impact lifestyles as high-impact sports cause failure.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Precision planning dramatically improves candidacy for borderline cases. Specialized Istanbul clinics like Dr. Gemalmaz use 3D patient-specific orthopedic tech to map unique bone structures before surgery. This computer-aided approach allows surgeons to precisely verify if enough healthy bone remains to spare the full joint.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find that surgeons emphasize ligament health as much as bone wear during pre-operative imaging. A common realization is that post-operative physical therapy compliance is the biggest factor in regaining full mobility.

What are the main advantages over total knee replacement?

Partial knee replacement preserves healthy bone, cartilage, and critical ligaments like the ACL, resulting in a more natural-feeling joint. This less invasive approach in Turkey typically allows for faster recovery, reduced post-operative pain, and lower complication risks compared to total knee replacement surgery.

  • Natural mechanics: Keeps the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) to maintain normal knee motion and stability.
  • Faster recovery: Patients often return to daily activities within 4–6 weeks instead of several months.
  • Reduced trauma: Smaller incisions lead to less blood loss, minimal swelling, and decreased surgical scarring.
  • Lower risks: Decreased likelihood of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and post-operative infections during the recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish centers like Turan Turan Health Group lead in robotic-assisted partial replacements, which significantly improves implant precision. Choosing robotic surgery or 3D patient-specific guides from specialists like Professor Gemalmaz often results in better long-term alignment than traditional manual techniques. This technology is particularly valuable for active patients wanting to maintain high flexion levels.

Patient Consensus: Many patients report walking without mobility aids within just a few days of surgery. They frequently highlight the lack of post-operative stiffness compared to those undergoing total replacements.

What is the success rate for this surgery in Turkey?

Unicompartmental knee replacement in Turkey typically maintains success rates between 90% and 95% for properly selected candidates. These outcomes mirror global standards for patients with single-compartment arthritis. High success depends on advanced MAKO robotic-assisted technology and specialized surgeons in JCI-accredited centers in Istanbul and Bursa.

  • Success rate: High success rates reach 95% using robotic-assisted techniques and 3D-printed guides.
  • Surgeon expertise: Top specialists like Dr. Kayhan Turan have performed over 3,500 robotic procedures.
  • Technology access: Centers utilize MAKO robotics and computer-aided design for precise implant positioning.
  • Accreditation standards: Leading facilities like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental maintain Joint Commission International certification.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Precision is the primary driver of longevity for partial replacements. While traditional surgery is common, choosing a clinic like Turan Turan Health Group with robotic MAKO integration significantly reduces human error. This technology ensures the implant aligns perfectly with your natural anatomy for better movement.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the rapid recovery as many return home within 5–7 days. Success often depends on verifying single-compartment damage via MRI before traveling to ensure the best surgical outcome.

What is the recovery timeline?

Recovery after partial knee replacement in Turkey is significantly faster than total replacement, typically involving a 1-3 day hospital stay. Most patients walk with assistance within 24 hours and return to light activities or desk work in 1-2 weeks. Full functional recovery usually occurs between 3 and 12 months.

  • Hospital discharge: Patients generally leave the clinic within 1-3 days after the procedure.
  • Initial mobility: Most individuals transition from walkers to unassisted walking within 7 days.
  • Activity milestones: Low-impact exercises like stationary biking often begin around week 3.
  • Travel readiness: International patients are typically cleared to fly home 10 days post-surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from specialized Turkish centers like Turan Turan Health Group shows that robotic-assisted techniques paired with immediate mobilization significantly cut recovery times. Surgeons like Dr. Kayhan Turan, who has performed 3,500+ robotic surgeries, emphasize that sparing the ACL and PCL allows for a more natural gait and faster range-of-motion gains than traditional surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that while the first week requires strict pain management, the ability to walk without a limp usually returns by week 6. Many highlight that starting physical therapy immediately is the most critical factor for reaching full strength within 3 months.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey for the surgery?

Patients typically need to stay in Turkey for 7 to 14 days for a unicompartmental knee replacement. This timeframe allows for pre-operative consultations, the surgical procedure, and approximately 3 to 5 nights of specialized in-hospital monitoring and early physical therapy before safely flying home.

  • Hospital stay: Expect to spend 3 to 5 nights recovering in the clinic for monitoring.
  • Pre-operative preparation: Arrive 1 to 2 days early for blood tests, X-rays, and surgical consultations.
  • Physical therapy: Start mobility exercises within 24 hours to ensure safe movement before your departure.
  • Travel safety: Plan 4 to 7 days post-discharge to manage swelling before any long-haul flights.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While total knee replacements often require 14 to 21 days, partial replacements at specialized centers like Turan Turan Health Group allow for quicker mobilization. Clinics using robotic-assisted technology often see patients ready for discharge by day 3. Adding 3 extra days in a hotel helps manage the initial swelling that cabin pressure can aggravate.

Patient Consensus: Many suggest booking business class for the return journey to keep the leg elevated. Most agree that 7 days is the absolute minimum, but 10 days feels much safer for recovery.

Why is Turkey a popular destination for this procedure?

Turkey is a leading destination for unicompartmental knee replacement due to its combination of JCI-accredited surgical expertise and significant cost advantages. Patients access advanced robotic-assisted techniques and 3D-printed custom guides while saving up to 86% compared to average US healthcare costs of $37,500.

  • Cost efficiency: Procedures typically range from $3,500 to $7,200 in Turkish clinics.
  • Surgical innovation: Facilities like Turan Turan Health Group utilize robotic-assisted systems for precision.
  • Specialized expertise: Surgeons often hold memberships in the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).
  • Rapid access: Patients benefit from short wait times, often securing surgery within 5-7 days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows Turkey is a pioneer in volume-based orthopedic care, with Turan Turan Health Group alone completing over 3,500 robotic surgeries. While many international clinics focus on standard replacements, Turkish centers like Professor Gemalmaz specialize in 3D-printed patient-specific implants. This high level of customization is a rare differentiator that often leads to better mechanical alignment and a more natural feel.

Patient Consensus: Patients frequently highlight the logistical ease of all-in-one packages that bundle surgery with physiotherapy and 5-star hotel stays. Many report a swift return to active hobbies like golf within 3 months, praising the coordination over long domestic waitlists.
