吻合部の治癒における重要な回復期間中、WAFI手術は制御されたチューブ式腸内容物ドレナージシステムを使用して吻合部を保護します。このシステムにより腸内容物を吻合部から一時的に迂回させ、腸管の連続性を維持しながら合併症リスクの低減を図ります。
人工肛門（ストーマ）の造設とその閉鎖のための二次手術を必要とする従来の消化管転換法とは異なり、WAFIシステムは治癒完了後に抜去可能なチューブ機構により、腸内容物を一時的に迂回させることができます。
本手術は腹腔鏡下またはロボット支援による低侵襲結腸直腸外科手術と組み合わせて実施することが可能であり、手術による侵襲を最小限に抑えながら精度の高い腫瘍学的切除を行い、術後のより速やかな回復を促します。
