Joint arthrodesis, or surgical joint fusion, is a procedure in which a damaged or painful joint is permanently stabilized by fusing the bones together. This eliminates joint movement while relieving pain and improving stability. Arthrodesis is typically recommended for patients with severe arthritis, joint instability, post-traumatic deformity, or when joint replacement is not suitable or has failed. While motion at the joint is lost, the procedure helps restore functional use, reduce chronic pain, and allow patients to perform daily activities more comfortably.
