  • My 34 years of medicine – which is more than half my life… After thousands of surgeries, the excitement and sense of responsibility of the first day still outweigh it. My father was a doctor, a neurologist too. I would always give the same response to those asking what I would be in elementary and secondary school: Neurosurgeon. When I started my neurosurgery residency at Haydarpaşa Numune Hospital in 1992, my childhood goal was fulfilled. Two points have always stood out from the others throughout my medical career: 1. Don’t harm anyone. 2. The most important relationship between the doctor and patient is the relationship of trust. In line with the principle of “first do no harm” in Turkish with “primum non nocere” in Latin, I have always preferred to perform secured surgeries under the microscope from smaller incisions. I didn’t perform any surgery that I wasn’t sure the patient would benefit from. So I’ve always been in a position to convince myself first of the need for surgery. Then I convince my patient. I kept in mind that the most important relationship between surgeon and patient is the relationship of trust. How can a person entrust his life to someone he saw 15 minutes ago without a relationship of trust? I cared about this relationship lasting post-surgery and even for life. I’ve had the first walks of my patients that I’ve operated in 28 years. Sometimes even after midnight many times… I’ve always cared about some patients’ feeling of their need to see their physician even at 03.00 o’clock midnight. I don’t mind giving all my patients my cell phone number. I would want my physician to be available at any time as needed. That’s what I do for my patients. In these lines, I felt the need to describe my view of medicine. Anyone who wonders anyway can reach my resume and my publications.

FAQ

Is stem cell treatment for muscular dystrophy effective?

Stem cell treatment for muscular dystrophy remains an experimental therapy with no proven clinical efficacy in humans. While research shows promise in animal models for restoring muscle function, current human applications in Turkey and globally are still in regulated clinical trial phases or offered as elective regenerative procedures.

  • Current status: Therapy is considered experimental and not a standard medical cure for MD.
  • Treatment protocol: Clinics like Liv Hospital Ulus use GMP-produced mesenchymal stem cells via intravenous infusion.
  • Clinical evidence: Early phase trials show safety but frequently fail to demonstrate long-term functional improvement.
  • Primary challenges: Medical hurdles include difficult cell delivery to all muscles and potential immune rejection.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many facilities offer stem cell applications, only a few like Liv Hospital Ulus operate an onsite, JCI-accredited GMP-standard laboratory. This certification is a critical quality marker for cell processing. However, patients should note that a 2-dose premium package costs $21,000, which is a significant investment for a procedure that researchers still classify as experimental rather than curative.

Patient Consensus: Families often report a short-term boost in energy that fades within months. Experts strongly advise tracking objective metrics like grip strength or the 6-minute walk test to distinguish real progress from temporary placebo effects.

Is the procedure safe and regulated?

Stem cell treatment for muscular dystrophy in Turkey is regulated through Ministry of Health protocols and GMP-certified laboratories. Major facilities like Liv Hospital Ulus operate Turkey’s first private GMP stem cell center. They maintain international safety standards verified by Joint Commission International (JCI) and ISO certifications.

  • Laboratory standards: Cells are processed in Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certified sterile laboratories.
  • Clinical accreditation: Top clinics hold Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation for patient safety.
  • Expert oversight: Specialized centers feature dedicated Director of Cell Technologies to manage sterile separation.
  • Treatment protocols: Standardized two-dose intravenous or intrathecal administration ensures controlled cellular delivery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics offer cellular therapies, safety correlates directly with lab purity. Liv Hospital Ulus stands out because it established Turkey’s first hospital-based GMP-standard center. This infrastructure allows for autologous mesenchymal stem cell expansion under stricter sterility than smaller, boutique clinics can provide.

Patient Consensus: Patients often report subjective improvements in energy and mood after treatment. However, many emphasize the importance of requesting documented quality-control test results and verifying if the clinic publishes peer-reviewed data before traveling.

Who is an ideal candidate for treatment?

Ideal candidates for stem cell treatment for muscular dystrophy in Turkey are typically younger patients in early stages who remain ambulatory. Best outcomes often occur in children under 12 with Duchenne muscular dystrophy or adults with slower-progressing forms like limb-girdle or facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy.

  • Clinical diagnosis: Requires confirmed genetic subtyping and baseline functional tests like the 6-minute walk test.
  • Mobility status: Patients who are still walking generally see better results than advanced wheelchair-bound cases.
  • Age factors: Turkish clinics often prioritize pediatric patients under 15 for maximal regenerative potential.
  • Health stability: Absence of severe comorbidities like significant heart or lung issues is strictly required.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from Liv Hospital Ulus shows that the most successful protocols use a two-dose approach within a 16-day stay. This extended itinerary allows for the GMP-produced mesenchymal stem cells to be administered alongside intensive pediatric consultations. We see that patients who combine these two doses with immediate physical therapy often maintain stability longer than those receiving single injections.

Patient Consensus: Many families report that early-stage children show the most noticeable improvements in walking stability. While adults with limb-girdle muscular dystrophy may experience reduced fatigue, those with aggressive progression often find limited benefits from the procedure.

What is the recovery process like?

Recovery from stem cell treatment for muscular dystrophy in Turkey involves a 2-day hospital monitoring phase followed by a 16-day specialized hotel recovery period. Patients typically undergo a 2-dose regimen of GMP-produced mesenchymal cells to support muscle tissue regeneration and functional mobility.

  • Initial monitoring: A 2-day hospital stay allows doctors to monitor for immediate post-injection reactions.
  • Stabilization phase: Patients remain in Turkey for 16 days to ensure safe early-stage recovery.
  • Clinical follow-up: Packages at Liv Hospital Ulus include follow-up examinations before patients return home.
  • Functional timeline: Improvements in muscle function generally begin to manifest within 6 to 12 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that premier facilities like Liv Hospital Ulus utilize Turkey’s first private GMP-standard stem cell center. This high-tier laboratory environment is crucial because it ensures cell purity and potency. While some clinics suggest a 2-week recovery, our data indicates that the most successful outcomes involve a full 18-day supervised stay. This longer window allows for essential vitamin infusions and pediatric or neurological consultations that stabilize the patient before international travel.

Patient Consensus: Many patients experience flu-like symptoms and significant fatigue during the first 2 weeks. It is often necessary to plan for 4-6 weeks of reduced activity rather than the shorter windows sometimes suggested.

Which are the best clinics for this treatment in Turkey?

Turkey hosts premier regenerative medicine centers like Liv Hospital Ulus, which features the first private GMP-standard stem cell laboratory in the country. These facilities specialize in mesenchymal stem cell isolation for muscle diseases, offering clinical-grade processing and multidisciplinary neurological care for international patients.

  • Liv Hospital Ulus: Features a dedicated GMP-certified center led by Professor Erdal Karaöz for cellular therapies.
  • Specialized expertise: Surgeons like Dr. Mehmet Akif Gogusgeren provide over 28 years of neurosurgical experience.
  • Technical standards: Clinics utilize closed-system sterile processing for bone marrow and adipose tissue isolation.
  • Comprehensive packages: Premium options include 2 doses, 16-day hotel stays, and VIP airport transfers.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many general hospitals offer stem cell therapy, the real differentiator in Turkey is the laboratory accreditation. Choosing a facility with an on-site GMP-standard laboratory, like Liv Hospital, ensures cells are processed under strict international protocols, which is vital for the viability of multiple-dose treatments.

Patient Consensus: Patients often report minor improvements in fatigue and strength when combining these treatments with physical therapy. Many emphasize that while costs are significantly lower than in the US, multiple sessions are usually required to maintain initial gains.
